Become a Member
The election of members follows certain guidelines. First, the Society requires applicants to have had their work exhibited in the Society’s annual FACE exhibition in two separate years, for which all entries undergo a selection process by the Society's Council. Once this has been achieved applicants are free to apply for membership which the Society’s Council assesses and comes to a decision. This makes it all sound rather a hurdle to become a member but it is intended to uphold the highest standards to which the Society aspires and which we are sure applicants would expect and support.
Please note that membership is open to all applicants worldwide and is not confined to those resident in the UK.
Once work has been exhibited in the Society’s FACE exhibition in two separate years, application for membership may be made.
To apply for membership of the Society applicants need to provide the following in printed form:
1. Provide good quality photographs of 10 examples of recent work. Where possible these should be of real individuals rather than of generic figurative subjects.
2. CV - to include any formal arts education and training, any significant commissions, group exhibitions, solo exhibitions and qualifications.
3. An 'artist's statement' to explain interest and motivation in this field of the arts.
In applying for membership applicants are accepting that, if successful, they will be required to pay an annual subscription, currently £230 for UK based members or £205 for non-UK members, and that by becoming a member they undertake 'to work to the best of their conscience in the pursuit of the interests of the Society as a whole and its ability to pursue its objectives. These are to advance the education of the public in the art of portrait and figurative sculpture, including maintaining the highest standards and the promotion and encouragement of such art'.
Application documents and photographs should be sent by WeTransfer to sps@portrait-sculpture.org with the Subject heading ‘SPS Membership Application’ and will be discussed at the next Council meeting which are held three times a year.
